Science Teacher Classroom Decorations Continue to Inspire the New School Year – Because of Them We Can

We would love to be in his class!

Jennifer Castillo is FAMU alumna and an aviation graduate who is known for his social media presence creative room decor. A fifth-year teacher, Castillo said it was always her dream to become an educator, PEOPLE reports.

“I have a picture of myself and I was like 7 or 8 years old. In the picture, I have a white board and I’m teaching my dolls. I always tell people that I live in one of the prayers “One of my dreams has come true,” said Castillo.

Castillo said he fondly remembers his teachers moving forward in the classroom, especially the thought of leaving fifth grade when he learned about Greek mythology that didn’t resonate with him.

“One of my teachers used to put pillars around the classroom and had a toga. It was cool and something I knew I wanted to use when I started teaching,” explained Castillo.

It’s a habit he picked up after earning his bachelor’s degree in biology from Florida A&M University. For the past five years, Castillo has been decorating her classrooms every year, first as a middle school teacher and now with high school students. For him, helping to create an experience and set the tone for the school year keeps students on their toes.

“I’ve been teaching different types of science—earth science, space science and natural science. Now I teach marine and environmental science…I teach a non-replaceable education, so I wanted to build an environment that will make my students happy,” he added.

Each year, Castillo chooses a unique theme that fits his theme, creating everything from Dexter’s Laboratory– rooms with a theme to A Proud Family. He started sharing his process of transforming his classes on Twitter, and someone suggested that he post it on TikTok. Since then, Castillo has an Etsy shop where she creates items that other teachers can purchase to bring creativity into their classrooms. Castillo wants to make it easier for teachers who often buy their own school supplies and they are responsible for shaping how their rooms look.

“One thing I want other teachers to know, with the limited funds and salaries we receive, is that you should always strive to do your best…Don’t listen to anyone. .Don’t listen to people who say you’re doing too much…Don’t feel bad when you want to do your best, but also don’t feel bad when you can’t…At the end of the day, let’s say here to teach, and there are other ways we can make it fun,” said Castillo.

The theme of this year’s classes is Kim It could happenand Castillo even dressed up as a player on the first day of school. The article was so interesting that actress Christy Carlson Romano, who produced the cartoon, gave a shout-out to Castillo for her hard work and sent a special message to Castillo’s students. But for a talented teacher, it’s all in the balance and it’s just another fun way to connect with students from day one!

“This year, since I’m teaching ocean science and environmental science, both of which are subjects that focus on the Earth and how we can better take care of it, I thought the most popular cartoon was Kim Possible. In her title track, she says she’s just an ordinary girl and she’s here to save the world. I thought it was worth it,” explained Castillo.
